2026 Salem #TeachTruth Walk
Come explore 1850’s Salem and the story of the landscape from the Mt. Zion AME Church, to the Hicksite Quaker Meeting House, to Hawley’s Grove and Jacob Heaton’s Quaker Tavern. We will meet at the church to go over the history of what will be seen on the tour. From the church, we will walk down 3rd to where the Mt. Zion AME church once stood and learn about what the AME churches represented in antislavery communities. We will go by the Quaker Hicksite meeting home and hear about the 1852 Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth interaction that is inscribed on her tombstone. The other half of the tour, we will go down 3rd street towards Hawley’s Grove, where the St. John AME church stands, and where UGRR conductor and Boyd Lodge Mason, George WS Lucas lived. The event is free to the public.
