SUMMARY:Ohio Historical Marker Dedication: 1876 Woman Suffrage Centennial Oak
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the unveiling of Geauga’s newest Ohio Historical marker dedicated to the Centennial Oak, which was planted by the Newbury Woman Suffrage Political Club (NWSPC) on July 4, 1876. The NWSPC and other women’s social reform associations headquartered at the South Newbury Union Chapel, which was the site of some of the first voting attempted by women in Ohio when the Newbury Nine presented themselves at the polls there in 1871. The Chapel and Oak were also the site of the 1919 Woman Suffrage March in Geauga. Enjoy suffrage re-enactments, historic readings of the Declaration of Sentiments and 19th Amendment, poetry, and music on the Chapel grounds in addition to the dedication ceremony. Just as their forefathers had done in the American Revolution, these local suffragists answered the revolutionary call of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony (who lectured at the Chapel in 1879) for freedom to represent themselves through the right to vote, which was finally granted by the 19th amendment in 1920.\n
